If you’ve listened to many podcasts, you know there are 2 primary ways they plan to make money or stay afloat:
- Selling ads
- Selling tiers of content
The thing is, the first option makes the listeners the product. When a host sells ad time or takes on sponsors, what they’re saying is, “I have X thousand listeners, and I will sell access to them.” And the second option can create haves and have-nots -- it’s a great way to say thank you to supporters, but it also says, “people with more money have more access.”
So I’m trying something else. I don’t want to sell ads or content -- I want us all to ask, “Is this podcast valuable?”
If it is, think about what it’s worth to you, and pledge that amount each month. Even a little bit can make a big difference.
If it isn’t, I’ll pack it in sooner or later, because I have bills to pay and I’ll need to find something that brings in money.
But we’re all this together, and we’re all at the same table. Let’s build something extraordinary together.
